What's included
- Local anaesthetic, surgical removal (including gum flap, bone easing or tooth sectioning where impacted) and dissolving stitches.
- Written aftercare instructions, gauze packs and follow-up dressing if dry socket develops.
- Form Med 2 signed by the dental practice or oral surgeon for surgical extraction of impacted wisdom teeth so you can claim 20% tax relief in Revenue myAccount.
- A written treatment plan and fee breakdown before any procedure is booked.
What pushes it up or down
- Simple vs surgical impacted extraction. A fully erupted upper wisdom tooth often lifts out simply (€150 to €300), whereas a lower wisdom tooth tilted into the tooth in front or buried in bone needs minor oral surgery (€350 to €500).
- How many teeth are removed in one sitting. Removing 2 to 4 impacted wisdom teeth together costs €700 to €1,400 and means only one recovery week and one sedation fee.
- Local anaesthetic vs conscious IV sedation vs general anaesthetic. Local anaesthetic is included; conscious IV sedation adds €350 to €450 per session (not per tooth); a day-case under general anaesthetic is €1,800 to €2,500.
- Nerve proximity on X-ray. If the lower wisdom tooth roots cross the inferior alveolar nerve canal on an OPG X-ray (€60 to €100), the surgeon orders a 3D CBCT scan (€140 to €220) and may recommend a nerve-sparing coronectomy.
- Tax relief and cover. Under Revenue rules, surgical extraction of impacted wisdom teeth qualifies for 20% tax relief on Form Med 2, while routine simple extractions do not. PRSI Treatment Benefit does not cover extractions.

Common questions before you book
How much does wisdom tooth extraction cost in Ireland?
A simple non-surgical extraction of a fully erupted wisdom tooth costs €150 to €300. Surgical removal of 1 impacted wisdom tooth costs €350 to €500 (€280 to €400 after 20% Form Med 2 tax relief). Removing 2 to 4 impacted wisdom teeth in a single sitting costs €700 to €1,400, and conscious IV sedation adds €350 to €450 per session.
Can I claim 20% tax relief (Form Med 2) on wisdom tooth removal?
Only if it is a surgical extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth. Under Revenue's Tax and Duty Manual Part 15-01-12, routine tooth extractions do not qualify for Form Med 2 tax relief, whereas surgical extraction of impacted wisdom teeth (in a dental surgery or hospital) qualifies for 20% income tax relief.
Does PRSI Treatment Benefit cover wisdom tooth extraction?
No. The Department of Social Protection's PRSI Treatment Benefit scheme covers an annual dental examination and €42 towards a scale and polish (or periodontal treatment). It pays €0 towards simple or surgical tooth extractions.
Does private health insurance cover impacted wisdom tooth removal?
Many Irish private hospital health insurance plans cover the surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth when performed by an insurer-approved consultant oral surgeon in a recognised day hospital or accredited clinic (minus any policy day-case excess, once pre-authorised). Routine simple extractions by a general dentist usually need a separate dental policy.
Does the Medical Card (DTSS) cover wisdom tooth extraction?
A valid Medical Card (DTSS) covers necessary routine tooth extractions with a DTSS-contracted dentist. If a wisdom tooth is deeply impacted or close to the inferior alveolar nerve and needs hospital oral surgery, your dentist refers you to an HSE Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department.
Is conscious IV sedation charged per tooth or per session?
Conscious IV sedation is charged per appointment session (€350 to €450), not per tooth. Having two, three or all four impacted wisdom teeth removed in a single sitting incurs only one sedation fee.

One Dental Council-registered clinic or oral surgeon covering your county contacts you. Nothing is booked until you have a written treatment plan.
